I was waiting for something like this to emerge, but I always thought the Third Party conservative candidate would take the form of some wingnut fundamentalist/pro-life movement that doesn't believe McCain is a strong conservative. But now apparently the boogey man from the Clinton impeachment years, former Georgia Rep. Bob Barr, is rearing his not-quite-as-ugly head and threatening to run for president as a right wing anti-war third party candidate.
Link.
I don't know how seriously to take this. Maybe Barr is getting ready to publish a book and needs the publicity. Or maybe, as the article suggests, he is merely trying to move McCain in a direction that is more in line with his ideals. Or maybe he just got bored of retirement from the political life and decided that he wants attention too. Or maybe the guy is actually going to run for president as a third party candidate and completely obliterate any chance McCain might have in November.
If he does in fact go through with this candidacy, and I am unconvinced that he will, this will obviously draw support from McCain's former Ron Paul supporters. And depending upon his current lelvel of popularity in his home state, he might even put Georgia in play for Obama in the general election. Wouldn't that be interesting?
I am stilling waiting for the disgruntled Christian fundamentalist right wing third party candidate to emerge. I cannot imagine that there will not ultimately be one. McCain did so much damage to his reputation among Christian conservatives, I don't imagine that any amount of hugging and kissing Jerry Falwell would have healed the deep wounds he inflicted on himself among this constituency.
That's all I got. Just wanted to share some potentially very good news.
